Jaw Pain and TMJ Relief in Anchorage

If your jaw clicks, aches, or locks up when you chew, yawn, or even just talk, you are definitely not alone. Studies estimate that 5 to 12 percent of adults deal with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) significant enough to need care. That’s millions of people navigating jaw pain, stiffness, limited mouth opening, and discomfort that makes eating, sleeping, and everyday conversation harder than it should be.

What’s Behind the Pain?

TMJ dysfunction rarely comes from one single cause. It usually involves a combination of factors working against each other:

  • Muscle tension and guarding from clenching or grinding, often stress-related
  • Joint inflammation or disc displacement inside the TMJ itself
  • Neck and upper back dysfunction, especially forward head posture, which changes how the jaw moves and overloads surrounding muscles
  • Referred pain that travels into the neck, shoulders, or triggers headaches

That connection between the neck and jaw is closer than most people realize, and it’s often the piece that gets missed when jaw pain is treated in isolation.

How We Can Help

At Bilan Chiropractic, we treat jaw pain as a whole-body issue. Our approach starts with a thorough evaluation of jaw motion, muscle tension, posture, and how the cervical spine is functioning. From there, care typically includes gentle chiropractic adjustments to the neck and upper back, soft tissue and myofascial release targeting the jaw muscles, and guided exercises for posture correction and jaw mobility.

When dental or specialist involvement makes sense, we work alongside those providers to make sure everything is coordinated.

A lot of people assume jaw pain is just something they have to manage long-term, or that medication and dental splints are their only options. But because TMD so often involves spinal mechanics and muscle imbalance, conservative chiropractic care can make a real difference without anything invasive. Treating the jaw in isolation, while ignoring the neck and surrounding muscles, often leaves a lot of improvement on the table.

The Neck Connection: A Real Patient Story

A patient came in after a toddler she was babysitting accidentally bumped heads with her, sending a direct impact into her lower jaw. She could not close her mouth and was in real pain. Her request was simple: adjust my jaw. Dr. Kurt Adams examined her carefully and did exactly that. No change.

During the intake she had mentioned a history of neck problems. Dr. Adams asked if he could adjust her neck as well, explaining the direct relationship between cervical function and the TMJ. She agreed.

“Immediately after adjusting her neck, she could close her mouth with no problems and no pain. This by no means applies to every TMJ case, but it demonstrates the correlation between TMJ problems and neck pain,” says Dr. Adams.
