Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Hand Numbness Isn't Always Just a Wrist Problem

If you've noticed numbness, tingling, or pain in your hand, you may be wondering if it's carpal tunnel syndrome. While the wrist is often involved, similar symptoms can also originate from the neck, shoulder, elbow, or surrounding muscles.
At Bilan Chiropractic, we don't assume the source of your symptoms. We begin with a thorough evaluation to determine what's causing your discomfort and whether chiropractic care may be an appropriate part of your treatment plan.

Could It Be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Common symptoms include:
  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
  • Wrist or hand pain
  • Weak grip strength
  • Burning or aching in the hand or forearm
  • Symptoms that worsen at night
  • Difficulty gripping or holding objects
  • Hand fatigue during repetitive activities
Because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions, an accurate diagnosis is important.

What's Actually Happening?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow space in the wrist called the carpal tunnel.
Repetitive hand use, prolonged computer work, inflammation, injury, and certain medical conditions can all contribute to this pressure.
However, not every case of hand numbness is true carpal tunnel syndrome. Similar symptoms may also be caused by nerve irritation elsewhere along the arm or in the neck, which is why we evaluate the entire upper extremity-not just the wrist.

Our Approach

Depending on your examination findings, your care may include:
  • Chiropractic adjustments when appropriate
  • Joint mobilization of the wrist, elbow, shoulder, or spine
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Nerve mobility exercises
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Postural correction
  • Ergonomic recommendations
  • Home exercises to support recovery
Our goal is to reduce mechanical stress, improve movement, and help you return to everyday activities with greater comfort.

Your First Visit

We'll ask about your symptoms, work activities, hobbies, previous injuries, and when you notice your symptoms the most.
Your examination may include:
  • Orthopedic testing
  • Neurological evaluation
  • Grip strength assessment
  • Wrist and upper extremity examination
  • Neck and shoulder evaluation
  • Posture and movement analysis
If your symptoms suggest additional testing or medical evaluation, we'll explain the next steps and help coordinate your care.

Why Patients Choose Bilan Chiropractic

The location of your pain doesn't always reveal the source of the problem.
That's why we evaluate the entire pathway of the nerve-from your neck to your fingertips-to better understand what's contributing to your symptoms.
By focusing on how your body functions as a whole, we can develop a treatment plan that's personalized to your needs and goals.

Can chiropractic care help carpal tunnel syndrome?
A. Many people with carpal tunnel syndrome or similar upper extremity conditions benefit from conservative chiropractic care. Whether it's appropriate depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms.

Does everyone with hand numbness have carpal tunnel syndrome?
A. No. Hand numbness can also be caused by conditions affecting the neck, shoulder, elbow, or peripheral nerves. A thorough evaluation helps identify the source.

Will I need surgery?
A. Not always. Many people improve with conservative treatment, although severe or progressive nerve compression may require evaluation by a specialist.

Should I wear a wrist brace?
A. A wrist brace may be helpful for some people, particularly at night. Recommendations depend on your symptoms and examination findings.

When should I seek immediate medical care?
A. If you experience sudden loss of hand function, significant weakness, or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek prompt medical evaluation.
