Bursitis Treatment in Anchorage
If you’ve been dealing with a nagging ache in your shoulder, hip, knee, or elbow, bursitis might be the culprit. It’s incredibly common here in Alaska, where people push hard to make the most of every trail, race, and adventure the state has to offer. We see it all the time at our practice, and we know how frustrating it is when joint pain gets in the way of doing what you love.
What Is Bursitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that sits between bones, tendons, and muscles to reduce friction and keep joints moving smoothly. When a bursa gets irritated, that smooth movement disappears fast. You’re left with sharp or aching pain, swelling, stiffness, and a joint that hurts more the more you use it.
It most commonly shows up in the shoulders, hips, elbows, and knees. Basically the joints that take the most repetitive stress during sports, outdoor activities, and daily life.
What Causes It?
Bursitis usually comes from repetitive motion, overuse, or a sudden increase in activity. We see it a lot in weekend warriors who go all-in on cross-country skiing without enough warm-up or recovery time, and in athletes ramping up training for events like the Gold Nugget Triathlon or the Mayor’s Midnight Sun Run.
Repetitive lifting, bending, or kneeling can trigger it too, and muscle imbalances or poor joint mechanics can quietly make things worse over time. Aging and underlying conditions like arthritis can also play a role.
How We Help
Here’s something a lot of people don’t expect: chiropractic adjustments can actually make a real difference with bursitis. Dr. Kurt Adams puts it well: “When you restore proper joint function, you take pressure off the inflamed bursa. That reduction in mechanical stress gives the tissue a chance to calm down and heal. Combined with supportive therapies, the results can be pretty remarkable.”
We bring together gentle joint manipulation, electric muscle stimulation, and ultrasound therapy to reduce inflammation, relax tight muscles, improve circulation, and get deeper healing going in the soft tissue around the joint. We round that out with personalized stretches, exercises, and posture guidance to strengthen the area and help prevent bursitis from coming back.
Care That’s Built Around You
We don’t just treat the joint. We take time to understand how bursitis is affecting your daily life, what activities are triggering pain, and what your goals are for recovery. From there, we build a care plan that fits your life and gets you moving comfortably again.
